Welcome to Bali, the island known for its beauty, cultural diversity, warm people and warmer waters. But our journey is not about Bali – it’s about Lombok an island to the East of Bali. Lombok is relatively less touristy and is fast picking up the spill over effects of Bali’s tremendous success. And in one area Lombok deals and that is in the area of volcanoes.
At Lombok’s centre is the majestic and active stratovolcano called Mount Rinjani which soars to 3726 meters (12,224 ft), making it the second highest volcano in Indonesia.

It is similar in height to Mount Fuji and is rated as one of the best climbs in the region.
This was our calling, our destination or our dance with destiny as we sought, to conquer its peak our limits and to put another notch on our climbing belts. But before we get into the trek itself, let’s look at some background information on Mount Rinjani, its caldera and surrounding areas.

Our group consisted of the usual suspects – young athletic sorts, middle aged daddies, double income no kids professionals, partners seeking a break from their partners, military personnel, pencil pushing accountants, button pushing technologist, civil servants and the odd characters that are there to bring colour and mystery to any group dynamics.
This was our team, our motley bunch of trekkers ready to climb Rinjani. But this group had to be organised, managed and eventually brought back home safely. This is where Vtrek comes in. Vtrek is a covert, government funded, liberalist, feminist, anti fur lobby (ok, you caught on at government funded).
